Description
Students will learn about the topic of subjective experience as it relates to health and illness, with special attention paid to the question of how we can understand and empathize with the experience of others in illness, particularly in the context of healthcare. How do my emotions shape my experience? How is my sense of self-related to my body? What is it to have consciousness? How can I understand what other people are going through? These are all questions that come up in the context of health and illness, and they all have to do with being a subject and having experience. The question of how to understand what it is to have an experience has been studied in fields such as Philosophy of Mind, Cognitive Science, and Phenomenology.
