Description

An introduction to the history, theory, and practice of public history. Public historians communicate the past to general audiences outside the academic world. They work for museums, archives, heritage centers, local and federal governments, think tanks, businesses, media companies, and many other organizations. The course examines various definitions and types of public history. It considers major ethical questions, debates, and controversies in the field. Students will gain practical experience in crafting public history. Assignments may include visiting museums, curating exhibitions, conducting oral interviews, managing archival records, annotating and transcribing historical manuscripts, designing websites, writing grant proposals, or developing restoration projects.
