Description
A survey of various aspects of the culture of the East Roman or Byzantine Empire (ca. 600-1200 CE). Special emphasis is placed on the church, state, and social classes in the creation of a distinctive Byzantine civilization, identity, and world-view. This course also examines achievements in the arts, philosophy, literature, and spirituality. This course is interdisciplinary in approach and includes readings in historical documents and slide lectures. For History majors and minors, this is designated a pre-1700 course.
